I was inspired to write and illustrate the Four Seasons in the Spring House series after living in a spring house in which a fresh-water stream ran through the length of the basement.
My cat Ronan and I would visit the basement each day to see what new visitors were there. It was a magical window into the world of nature--right at home!
The overall goal of the book series is to encourage children to have compassion and love for animals and to treat them well. This includes helping children see animals as living beings and allowing wild animals to remain in their natural habitat in which they can roam, swim, or fly in freedom.
Underlying messages include the importance of collaboration, imagining ourselves in another's situation, and using our unique skills to help other people and animals.
